Paycheck taxes in Ohio
Ohio withholding follows the Ohio Department of Taxation's percentage method (the department's optional computer formula, tables effective August 1, 2026): subtract $650 for each exemption claimed on Form IT 4 (prorated per pay period), then apply the withholding rates — 1.600% on the first $26,050 of annual withholding-taxable wages, 2.990% up to $100,000, and 3.400% above that. With one exemption, a $1,000 weekly paycheck has about $22.57 of Ohio tax withheld.
Two things catch Ohio workers out. First, many Ohio cities levy their own income tax (for example Columbus and Cleveland at 2.5%, Cincinnati at 1.8%), and some school districts do too — those local taxes are not included here and can take a real bite. Second, Ohio's withholding formula applies its 1.600% first-bracket rate from the first dollar of withholding-taxable wages even though the annual return taxes the first $26,050 at 0%; the difference is settled when you file your Ohio return.
Frequently asked questions
- How is Ohio paycheck tax calculated?
- Annual wages minus $650 per IT 4 exemption, taxed at 1.600% up to $26,050, 2.990% up to $100,000, and 3.400% above, then divided by your pay periods — the Ohio Department of Taxation's published withholding formula (tables effective August 1, 2026).
- How much Ohio tax comes out of a $1,000 weekly paycheck?
- With one exemption: taxable wages are $52,000 − $650 = $51,350, the annual tax on the department's annual table is $417 + 2.99% of the amount over $26,050 = $1,173.47, so about $22.57 per week — before any city tax.
- Does Ohio have local income taxes?
- Yes — most Ohio cities and villages tax wages (roughly 1%–3%), and some school districts add an income tax. They are withheld separately by your employer and are not included in this calculator.
- Why is tax withheld when Ohio's first $26,050 is taxed at 0%?
- The 0% bracket applies on your annual return to income after your full personal exemptions. The withholding formula uses its own rate table starting at 1.600%, so withholding during the year can exceed the final bill — you get the difference back as a refund.
